Trash Golf was born at a municipal course in New York, and our founder works as a golf pro at a muni outside New York City. So take this as the inside answer to a question people genuinely ask: what should you wear at a muni?
The short answer
A collared shirt or a clean crewneck, shorts or pants without holes in them, and shoes you can walk 18 in. That clears the bar at almost every municipal course in America. Munis care that you keep pace and fix your ball marks. They do not care about your belt matching your shoes.
What actually matters
- A hat. You are outside for four to five hours. A waterproof performance cap with real ventilation earns its spot. This is what our rope hats were built for.

- A belt that can take a beating. Woven stretch belts move with your swing and do not scuff like leather. Ours are Dept Issue.
- Pockets full of the right stuff. Marker, tees, one glove, sunscreen. That is the uniform.
What nobody at a muni cares about
Tucked shirts. Logo etiquette. Whether your pants are technically joggers. Whether your hoodie is golf branded. The muni dress code is self respect plus pace of play, and that is the culture this whole brand comes from.
Frequently asked questions
Can you wear a hoodie to play golf?
At a municipal course, yes, almost always. Performance hoodies are standard on course now at every level short of old line private clubs. If in doubt, call the shop.
Do municipal courses have dress codes?
Most have a light one: shirt with sleeves, no swimwear, shoes required. Very few require collars anymore, but a collared shirt is never wrong.
What is muni golf?
Municipal golf is public golf on courses owned by a town, county, or city. Affordable rates, first come tee sheets, all skill levels, and in our opinion the best culture in the sport.
